The Benefits of the Mediterranean Diet

Hi! My name is Liam Brennan and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Church Resources, Sandhurst Fine Foods, Dr Karen Abbey and the University of Queensland for giving me the opportunity to further develop my skills as a Dietitian, in particular within the food industry.

Throughout the 5 weeks of my placement with Sandhurst I was given the task of investigating and developing recipes and resources which could promote Sandhurst products as part of a healthy diet, in particular the Mediterranean advantages.

As some of you may know, the Mediterranean diet is a style of eating popular in countries such as Spain, Italy and Greece.

Through its high intake of monounsaturated fats (omega fatty acids), vegetables, fruits and grains it has the potential for many health benefits including:

  • managing weight
  • boosting nutrient intake
  • lowering cholesterol
  • reducing the risk of heart disease

The Mediterranean diet is also an extremely tasty way of eating, and the fantastic products at Sandhurst Fine Foods fit in perfectly!

I think placements like the one I did with Sandhurst are priceless for dietetic students such as myself, which gave me valuable exposure to working with companies within the food industry. In fact, I have already used this placement as an example of skills acquired in an interview for a potential job! So again I would just like to say thank you, and I hope that these partnerships and placements can continue to happen, and help to create fully competent dietitians.
