What was the problem?
To reinforce their commitment to sustainability, Adelaide Zoo wanted to partner in a green energy project to help power its panda exhibit.
What was AGL’s solution.
In consultation with the zoo, AGL designed and installed a 10.2kW solar photo votaic (PV) system onto the panda exhibit’s roof. Electricity generated through the system was connected to a local switchboard, feeding power directly into the panda exhibit to help power the enclosure’s chilled rocks and other building services. To ensure ongoing maintenance would be easier, existing roof walkways were extended and harness lines installed.
What it means for the future.
The AGL solar PV system is predicted to reduce 9.5 tonnes of greenhouse gas (CO2-e) annually. These emission savings is equal to 221 trees planted, or 1.8 cars removed off the road for one year. What’s more important is the simple case it makes for renewable energy.
Visitors to the panda enclosure can easily see the performance of the solar PV system via an LCD information screen teaching them how beneficial and simple solar energy can be. With many school children visiting the pandas, it helps future generations understand renewable energy is a very real and viable option.
